Spruce Customer Apps
Lead Design of the suite of apps for Spruce’s customer experience. Native mobile apps for iOS/Android and Web App that all functioned at feature parity with one another, with a nested Design System component library to provide clean and easy to use UI for all our customers.
iOS
When I started at Spruce, there was a legacy iOS app, that left much to be desired. Bad UI, confusing interactions, and an outdated style were among the many down sides the app had to offer. A custom Design System was created that took principles from both Human Interface guidelines and Material Design to create a clean and simple UI that made it easy for customers to navigate and book services. Over time, we continued to improve areas of the app based on user performance and data.
Android
The core user base of our Customer Apps is on iOS, but we knew we wanted to offer an Android app to our user base to be as inclusive as possible. Leaning on Material Design standard components and interactions, our task was to create a native mobile app from the ground up — Design and Engineering — in 3 months. The result was a clean, easy to use UI that allowed our Android customers to conveniently book services on their native platform.
Web
The customer experience on the web was long out of date, and to help support some re-platforming efforts, we redesigned the Customer Web App with an eye towards speed and reusable components. Leaning on Material Design for the base of our UI design system, we were able to quickly design and collaborate with engineering to implement a whole new experience with noticeable improvements from the old product.
Process
Documenting all platform IA’s, to improved user flows, story mapping and journeys — all in collaboration with Product and Engineering. With a lean Design team, research time was not always able to be slotted. Focusing in on nuanced and comprehensive flow planning, gaining an understanding of user decisions based on data, is typically the focus when a project kicked off.
